Financial counselling to prevent evictions

Being responsible for providing housing for those with low incomes and sometimes chaotic lives calls for acts of social responsibility.

Seeing rising eviction rates in 2012, Housing association Sealand, Denmark, chose to stop and turn the tides of evictions.

The main inititaive is to make contact with tenant who are due, and therefore on the verge of getting evicted from their homes. Financial counselling is provided.

The initiative is carried out with financial counsellors in collaboration with the regional Danske Bank and local accounting company RIR. Partnerships both provide counselling and training.

Eviction rate has dropped by more than a third, and at the same time expenses connected to evictions have fallen DKK 10 million, benefitting both municipality and tenants alike.

Young people are especially vulnerable to eviction. The newest addition is to educate a number of Finance Cadets in collaboration with Danske Bank to learn young people how to pay their bills on time.
